When Elizabeth Eleanora Brewster’s city cousins came over, they always said,”You country bumpkins must be SOO bored!” And she would reply,”With this many siblings, you never get bored!”
Elizabeth Eleanora was the third child of Sarah and James Brewster. Before her came Samuel Robert and Samantha Margaret. After her came Floreen Flora, Maria Martha, James Christian and Joyce Willow. Sarah was also pregnant. Their neighbors called the seven “The Brewster Bunch”. Their closest neighbors lived five miles away.
Mama’s parents, Grandma and Grandpa Wyte, lived with them. The little house Papa built nearly spilt over with them around. The house was bursting at the seams at Christmas. Right now, Aunt Zara, Lily and Anna were staying with them while Uncle Allen built them a house.
Elizabeth could hear Joyce and Anna in the other room. “Come play Nora!” called Maria from the room she shared with Joyce and Flora. Elizabeth ran to join her and James.
Flora in sitting room tried to keep her eyes from wandering to the window. She wanted to go outside but Mama wouldn’t let her until her sampler was finished. The intricate floral pattern that went with her sampler took longer than the other’s patterns had. She sighed, then forced her eyes from the window and kept working.
Samantha, called Molly by her siblings, shared a room with Nora. Lily slept with them right now. Samuel, or Sam, slept with James next door. Maria, Flora and Joyce, or Joy as they called her, slept with Anna in the biggest room. Next to their room was Mama and Papa’s room on one side and Grandma and Grandpa’s room on the other. “Molly! Anna took Jenny!” cried Joy from her room. Molly dashed over. “Anna, that’s Joy’s dolly. Let her have it.” scolded Molly. “No!” said Anna, pouting. “Anna, I’m going to count to ten,” said Nora. “One, two,...” Anna quickly handed over Jenny. “Thank you,” said Joy. “Good manners!” said Molly. Joy beamed while Anna pouted. “Joy, do you have a dolly that Anna could play with?” asked Molly. “She could use Maria’s if Maria would let her,” said Joy after thinking a moment. “Go ahead Anna,” called Maria from where she was playing with James and Nora. “Yay!” cried Anna as she reached for Maria’s doll, Bella.
